A Profile of a Formed Jesuit for Asia Pacific

Probably our most decisive formation occurred at home when our mothers and fathers encouraged us to take our first steps.  Jesuits are no different from anyone else in our stages of growth. We are each responsible for the values and patterns of behaviour we appropriate to ourselves. Yet since much is demanded of them, a Jesuit’s personal formation is necessarily long and deep. Read more

Forming Jesuits for Asia Pacific

The Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific has released a detailed document on formation for Jesuits for this part of the world. 

Entitled “Forming a Contemplative in Action: A Profile of a Formed Jesuit for Asia Pacific”, the document addresses three major questions – What does a formed Jesuit look like?  What specific issues does initial formation need to address? Read more

Flood misery continues across Southeast Asia

An estimated 20 million people across Southeast Asia have been affected by flooding since June. Most are in Thailand, but typhoons struck the Philippines in October, and Laos was hit by cyclones in July and August.  About 1.8 million people in Cambodia and Vietnam are also suffering from the worst flooding in a decade.  Read more

In Cambodia, floods have scattered the hope of the people

As the floodwaters in Cambodia recede, the work of recovery and reconstruction begins. Fr Greg Priyadi SJ, Director of Jesuit Service Cambodia, reflects on the damage caused of by worst floods the country has experienced in years and the tough times faced by the people who have lost their homes, their harvest and their livelihoods. Read more

New JRS Asia Pacific director

Fr Bambang Sipayung SJ has been appointed Regional Director of Jesuit Refugee Service-Asia Pacific.  His three-year term begins on June 1, 2012.

Fr Sipayung replaces Fr Bernard Arputhasamy SJ who has served the region with dedication and competence for nearly seven years. Read more

Supporting Timor Leste

More than 200 people from St Canice’s Parish in Sydney turned out for this year’s annual dinner to raise money for people in Timor Leste.

Special guests at this year’s celebration at Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club on October 29 were East Timorese scholastics Dino Sarmento and João dos Santos, who are currently studying at Jesuit Theological College in Melbourne. Read more

JRS Asia Pacific kicks off tertiary education project for refugees

Refugees and asylum seekers now have the opportunity to get a degree in European universities in 2012 with the launch of applications to the AREAS scholarship on November 1.

The Academic Relations between Asia and Europe (AREAS) is a mobility and scholarship project financed by the European Commission through the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 – Strand 1 programme. Read more

 
Formation

The Chinese Province is now taking applications for the fifth Chinese International Regency Programme, which begins on August 15, 2012.

The Chinese International Regency Programme aims to make a concrete contribution to the formation of Jesuits with a more global perspective, for future wide-ranging missions. The international regents are also a concrete response from other Jesuit provinces to one of the five apostolic preferences of the whole Society: China. Read more

Second APTEP begins in April 2012, applications open

The second Asia Pacific Theological Encounter Programme (APTEP) will be held from April 10 to May 8, 2012.   Conducted by the Indonesian Jesuits, the one-month programme on “Dialogue with Muslims” was first held in 2011.  It was born from the positive successful immersion programme conducted in 2009 with 18 Indonesian Jesuit scholastics living in an Islamic boarding school (pesantren) for two weeks. Read more

ACU online programme for refugees provides model for university educators

An online programme that provides refugees on the Thai-Burma border with the opportunity to study for a university degree is the subject of a chapter in a new book called Ethnicity and Race.  The programme is the brainchild of the Refugee Tertiary Education Committee (RTEC), which was formed by Fr Michael Smith SJ from the Australian Province. Read more

Spirituality in campus life

Spirituality is a vital part of campus life at Kolese De Britto in Jogjakarta, and the health of the spiritual life of the Kolese De Britto family is the main focus of its Campus Ministry. 

So, when Fr Robert Rimmin SJ was assigned to work in the Campus Ministry in August, he asked himself “How do we give and share our Ignatian heritage to the member of Kolese De Britto family?” Read more

Ricci Legacy Symposium videos online

Videos from The Ricci Legacy Symposium held in Hong Kong in December 2010 are now available online. The four-day sumposium on inculturation was collaboration between Xavier House Spiritual Formation Centre in Hong Kong and Georgetown University in the United States. Read more

Fr Bienvenido Nebres declared National Scientist

Philippine President Benigno Aquino III has conferred the rank and title of National Scientist on Fr Bienvenido Nebres SJ, for his outstanding contributions to science and mathematics education and social reform. The title of national scientist is considered the highest honour given to a scientist in the country. Read more

Fr General: Evangelisation-through-dialogue

Father General Adolfo Nicolás SJ speaks to The Way about Interreligious Dialogue: The Experience of some Pioneer Jesuits in Asia.

Before becoming Superior General of the Jesuits in 2008, Adolfo Nicolás worked for many years in Asia. Here he draws on that experience to argue for the contemporary emergence of a new paradigm for the work of spreading the gospel, that of ‘evangelisation-through-dialogue’. Read more

Fresh approach to formation

The annual camp of a new Catholic youth movement run by Jesuits in Bangladesh is providing a fresh approach to youth formation that many participants say is both fascinating and useful.

Around 70 students from across the country attended the MAGIS (Marching and Growing in Solidarity) Bangla camp held at St. Leo Church in Baromari in Mymensingh diocese from November 8 to 12. Read more

Bridges between the young and the Church

Jesuits need to be "real bridges between the young and the Church", said Father General Adolfo Nicolás in a letter to the Society written as a synthesis of the ex-officio 2011 letters. 

The ex-officio letters are the annual letters from every Province on a subject which Father General indicates each year. Last year, he asked for information about Jesuit work for youth. Read more
